She never left a note in her life. Last night she left one, and somebody typed it.
The scene
Bandra, Bombay, August 1964. A bungalow on the sea side of Pali Hill belonging to Sandhya Roy, the leading lady of Mahalaxmi Pictures' last six films. The wrap party for her latest film ended at eleven the night before.
The victim
Sandhya Roy, 32, found at 7am by her cook in the upstairs writing room, an empty bottle of sleeping pills beside her, a typed note on the desk. The Bombay Police Bureau has already called it a suicide. Your job is to prove the note is the lie everyone has agreed to believe.
The suspects
- Rajan Mehra (Producer) — Has three unreleased films riding on Sandhya Roy’s next contract, a contract she told him, at the wrap party, she would not be signing.
- Vikram Choudhary (Estranged Husband) — Has not lived in this house in over a year, and yet was seen leaving it less than an hour before the cook found her.
- Suraj Khanna (Co-star) — Spent the entire wrap party at Sandhya’s side, close enough that half the industry is already gossiping about it.
- Lalita Bai (Cook & Housekeeper) — Found the body, and found the note, and is certain neither one looks like the woman she has worked for these past six years.
- Ganpat (Night Watchman) — Signs every visitor in and out of this bungalow, and his logbook for last night is missing exactly one name.
Every one of them is hiding something, and their alibis form a single shared timeline. Somewhere in it, one statement cannot possibly be true. Find the contradiction and you have found the killer.
How to read this case
The Bombay Police Bureau wants this filed and forgotten, which means every piece of evidence you gather has to work twice as hard: once to prove it was murder at all, and again to prove who actually typed the note. Start with the typewriter itself. A woman who never once left a note in her life did not suddenly, on her worst night, learn to type one.
Why play it
The Leading Lady is Bombay film-world noir at full volume: wrap parties, a jealous producer with three films on the line, a marriage gone cold in public, and a police force far more interested in a quiet headline than an honest one. It rewards players who enjoy a mystery where the official story is the first thing you have to dismantle, and where the victim’s own fame is part of what got her killed.
